ART THERAPY

PROJECT

The Art Therapy project, with 20 students, ranging in ages from 13 – 18 years, and representing newcomer students from more than 8 countries, was a successful model that can be replicated.

With the cooperation of two local school districts, a local art studio, a private counsellor, and local NGO settlement workers, Global Village implemented this action oriented project.

ART THERAPY PROJECT

Traumatic stories can be troubling to overcome. Youth arriving into a new school where they do not speak the language often feel isolated and alone.

Art therapy can be used to increase coping skills. An advantage of art therapy is the ability for a person to express his/her feelings without having to verbalize.

Art therapy uses the creative process of making art to improve a person’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being. The creative process helps people resolve issues, manage feelings, reduce stress, and improve self-esteem.

The project was designed to have a healing effect on the artist participants by helping them overcome trauma related to relocating to a new country.

It helped me find a connection to words, art and my past

The thing I found most valuable was that everyone is different because of our backgrounds

... able to express how I experienced the life of entering a new country

This project will help inform and increase understanding of the challenges of integration of newcomers.
